Planting in the Fall
In California allows the plantrs to absorb the winter rains, and is often
a very good time to plant. New plantings can focus on root development,
preparing to bring growth, which allows much hardier, and well-established
plants for the spring and summer months. Plants native to California and
with similar climates such as Chile, western Australia, South Africa's
and the Mediterranean usually benefit the most from Fall plantings here
in The Bay Area.
Planting in the Spring Most of us choose the spring
to start new garderns and landscape projects and the abundance of
flowering species at local nurseries makes this time of year all
the more attractive. With the soil still moist from the winter rains
and the plants and flowers eager to grow and blossom the spring
is a great time to start your new garden. Be sure to plan early
and try to schedule ahead when planning to use the help of designers
and installers as this is their busiest time of year.
Winter and Summer planting
The Summer can be the busiest time for landscape
projects but in the Bay Area's mild climate we can be inspired and start
a garden most anytime of the year. During the winter months it is possible
to make plans, do hardscaping, and plant bulbs and other dormant species
that will take root in the moist soil and be ready for more growth come
spring. Plants delicate to freezes and shock are better choices for
spring. Hot dry summer months may also be too much for some species
especially without adequate irrigation.
